Lectures on Comparative Anatomy, Physiology, Zoology, and The Natural History of Man.
LAWRENCE, WILLIAM

12 engraved plates, some folding, spotting to most plates; ix+396pp; a some leaves spotted.

The label of J. Rowbotham of 70 Castle Street East, Oxford Street describes himself as a 'Patent Bookbinder'. He used India rubber to glue the pages to the spine, and this is the method he employed here and would explain the loosening of some of the plates. This is a very early example of the so-called gutta percha binding, which was invented by William Hancock in 1836. This book would appear to a bespoke binding rather than one commissioned by the publisher. For another Rowbotham binding see Maggs Bros Catalogue 1098 (1989) item 536 from the E.P. Wormersley collection, where it is noted that Bernard Middleton dates the first use of a Caoutchouc binding to 1839. Sir William Lawrence, 1st baronet [1783-1867] became the surgeon at St Bartholomew's Hospital. The original publication of these lectures proved controversial.
